Xi vows opposition against words, actions damaging ethnic unity

BEIJING, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called for resolute opposition to any words and actions that damage the country's ethnic unity.

"We will build a 'wall of bronze and iron' for ethnic unity, social stability and national unity," he said while joining a panel discussion with members from the minority ethnic groups of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Xi said the tradition of all ethnic groups in the country "breathing the same air and sharing the same fate" should be handed down from generation to generation.

"Unity and stability are blessings, while secession and turmoil are disasters," he said. "People of all ethnic groups of the country should cherish ethnic unity."

Xi also urged that everything possible be done to accelerate the social and economic development of China's minority ethnic groups and the ethnic areas and to bring concrete benefits to people there.

The Chinese president's remarks came days after a group of knife-wielding attackers killed 29 people and injured 143 others at a crowded train station in southwest China's Kunming City.

The country's political advisors convened Monday in Beijing for their annual full session that is scheduled to last 10 days.

Chinese premier stresses stable, sound economic growth

BEIJING, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Premier Li Keqiang stressed on Tuesday that China must deepen reforms and maintain stable, sound economic growth as the country is still facing a complicated situation.

Li made the remarks while taking part in a panel discussion with political advisors from the economic and agricultural sectors at the ongoing annual session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, the country's top political advisory body.

China made hard-earned achievements in reforms last year despite increasing downward pressure on economy, said Li, who called for deepening reforms to inject dividends into the economy.

The country's economy grew 7.7 percent in 2013, overshooting the official target of 7.5 percent, But a shaky start this year, as shown in soft manufacturing activity, has put the focus on how the government will pace and sequence its overhauls while guaranteeing solid growth amid the world's fragile recovery.

Li urged economic restructuring and transformation of the growth model to improve the quality and efficiency of the economy.

He asked for further streamlining of administration and delegating more power to lower levels, as well as building a fair environment for development.

Li said China will vigorously develop a mixed-ownership economy and will deepen fiscal and taxation reforms to better serve the real economy.

China will also speed up experiments in the Shanghai pilot free trade zone to boost development and reform through opening up, he said.

Li also called for system and technology innovation to promote agricultural modernization and ensure food safety in the country.

China's top disciplinary official urges for redoubling anti-corruption efforts

BEIJING, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Wang Qishan, head of the Communist Party of China's disciplinary organ, on Tuesday called for stepped-up efforts to crack down on corruption.

Wang made the remarks while participating in a panel discussion with political advisors from the China Democratic League and the China Association for Promoting Democracy at the ongoing annual session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee.

Wang, secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), said the CPC central leadership had stuck to the principle that the Party must exercise self-discipline and be strict with its members, and had redoubled efforts to improve the Party's work style, build a clean government and fight corruption.

The eight-point bureaucracy- and formalism-fighting guidelines put forth by the CPC Central Committee in late 2012 must be earnestly implemented, he said.

Wang said he hopes political advisors can play their own roles in democratic oversight and contribute to the country's anti-corruption drive.
